Gilbert, in the heart of Maricopa County
Gilbert started as a single rail siding. In 1902, landowner William "Bobby" Gilbert donated the right-of-way for a rail line pushing through the area toward Florence and Kelvin — the origin of both the town's name and its location — and the town was officially incorporated on July 6, 1920. Construction of the Eastern Canal in 1904 and the Roosevelt Dam in 1911, part of the Salt River Project, brought reliable irrigation to the desert and fueled a farming boom; in the early 20th century, especially during and after World War I, Gilbert became known as "the Hay Shipping Capital of the World."
Gilbert stayed a small farm town for decades — just 1,971 residents in 1970. In the 1970s, watching the growth already reshaping neighboring Tempe, Mesa and Chandler, the Town Council approved a strip annexation covering roughly 53 square miles of surrounding county land, the decision credited with setting up everything that followed. Population then grew explosively — 29,188 in 1990, 109,697 in 2000, 208,453 in 2010 — and reached 267,918 at the 2020 Census; the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent estimate puts the town above 287,000. Gilbert is legally a "town," not a "city," under Arizona law — a technicality that hasn't slowed its growth into one of the largest municipalities of any kind in the state.
